Floor weight calculator

A tile floor on a 2 in mortar bed weighs about 27 lb per square foot; the same tile set directly on a slab weighs under 6. Enter your layers to see the load per square foot, the room total and which layer adds the most.

How much does a tile floor weigh per square foot?

Add up the dead load of each layer. A sand-cement bed weighs about 10.4 lb per sq ft for every inch; thinset adds roughly what its powder weighs, 0.8 to 1.3 lb per sq ft; porcelain weighs about 1.5 lb per sq ft for every 1/8 in of thickness. Grout is light — a few hundredths of a pound for large tile, more for mosaics.

So a 2 in mortar bed with porcelain comes to about 27 lb per sq ft, while the same tile bonded straight to a slab weighs under 6. The calculator lists every layer, the total per square foot and for the room, and the same floor without the screed, using the layers set up in the floor renovation calculator.

Weight of each layer

Typical values; the weight printed on a box beats any of them:

  • Sand-cement screed or mortar bed: about 10.4 lb per sq ft per inch.
  • Gypsum (anhydrite) poured underlayment: about 10.4 lb per sq ft per inch.
  • Self-leveler: about 8.3 lb per sq ft per inch.
  • Thinset: 0.8 to 1.3 lb per sq ft, about the weight of the powder.
  • Tile at 3/8 in: porcelain 4.6 lb per sq ft, ceramic 3.9, marble, granite or slate 5.3, limestone 4.7, terracotta 3.7.
  • Planks: click vinyl (SPC) about 2 lb per sq ft at 5 mm, laminate about 1.5 lb at 8 mm, engineered wood about 2 lb.

The floor weight formula

load = Σ layer weights per sq ft; room total = load × area

Screeds and levelers use their coverage rate times their depth, thinset counts as its powder weight, and tile and planks use the box weight divided by the box coverage — or thickness × a typical density when no box weight is entered. The screed calculator uses the same rates for the bags.

Worked example

  • Room 12 × 10 ft = 120 sq ft: 2 in sand-cement bed, thinset 1.23 lb per sq ft, 3/8 in porcelain, 1/16 in grout joints.
  • Bed 20.81 + thinset 1.23 + porcelain 4.58 + grout 0.02 = 26.65 lb per sq ft.
  • Room total: 26.65 × 120 = 3,198 lb.
  • Without the bed: 5.84 lb per sq ft, 701 lb for the room.

Wood framing and upper floors

On a slab on ground the weight rarely matters. On wood joists or a suspended floor it does: many US joist span tables assume a dead load of 10 lb per sq ft for the whole floor, and tables for 20 lb are used under tile and stone. A mortar bed with tile is well above both. Tile guidance also asks for a stiff floor — commonly L/360 deflection for ceramic and porcelain and L/720 for natural stone. The calculator does not know your joist spans, so check the framing or ask a structural engineer before adding a heavy floor.

Weight to carry home

Below the per-square-foot figures, the calculator adds up what you will carry: bags of mix and thinset at their bag weight, and boxes of tile or planks at the weight printed on the box, or an estimate from typical density when you have not entered it. Even a small bathroom with leveler, thinset and tile often comes to 300 lb or more — worth knowing before you load the car.

Frequently asked questions

How much does screed weigh per square meter?

About 2 kg per m² for every millimeter, so a 50 mm screed is about 100 kg per m² — 10.4 lb per sq ft for every inch.

How much does porcelain tile weigh per square foot?

About 4.6 lb per sq ft at 3/8 in thick and 3 lb at 1/4 in. The weight printed on the box divided by the box coverage is more accurate.

Can my floor joists hold a tile floor?

Often yes for tile set on the subfloor or a thin membrane, at about 6 to 8 lb per sq ft. A mortar bed at 25 lb or more needs framing designed for it — check your span tables or ask an engineer.

Is self-leveler lighter than sand-cement screed?

Slightly, about 8.3 lb per sq ft per inch against 10.4, but it is usually poured much thinner, so it adds far less weight.

How much will I carry home for one bathroom?

The weight-to-carry list adds up your bags and boxes. A small bathroom with leveler, thinset and porcelain is often 300 to 400 lb.
