Stair flooring calculator

Stairs are bought by the piece, not the square foot: one nosing per step, a strip or two for each tread and riser, and an offcut from every plank. Enter the number of steps and their size to get nosings, planks or tile, and adhesive.

How much flooring for stairs?

Each step gets a nosing on its front edge, one or two strips of plank on the tread behind it and a strip on the riser, and each strip is cut from a plank whose leftover is usually too short for anything else. That is why stairs take more material than their square footage suggests.

The calculator counts nosings, tread and riser strips and planks, adds 10% for breakage and mistakes, and joins the stair planks to the rest of the floor before rounding to boxes — so a matching floor and staircase share boxes. Use “Add stairs” in the vinyl plank calculator or the laminate flooring calculator to do both at once.

How to measure a staircase

You need five numbers, all taken on the existing stairs:

  • The treads being covered and the risers — usually one more riser than treads.
  • Width: side to side, between the walls or stringers.
  • Tread depth: from the riser to the front edge, including the existing overhang.
  • Riser height: from one tread to the next.
  • A landing, if there is one; it is counted by area like a small floor.

The stair formula

nosings = ⌈E ÷ ⌊L_nosing ÷ W⌋⌉; strips = treads × rows_tread + risers × rows_riser; planks = ⌈strips ÷ ⌊L ÷ W⌋⌉

E is the number of nosed edges, W the stair width and L the plank length. rows_tread comes from the tread depth minus the nosing cover, divided into plank widths; rows_riser from the riser height. Planks get 10% extra before rounding to boxes, and adhesive is ⌈treads ÷ 2⌉ tubes.

Worked example

  • 13 treads, 14 risers, 36 in wide, treads 10 1/4 in including the overhang, risers 7 1/4 in; vinyl plank 47 1/4 × 7 1/2 in, 8 per box; nosings 94 in covering 3 in.
  • Nosings: 13 + 1 = 14 edges; 94 ÷ 36 → 2 per piece → 7 nosings.
  • Tread field 10.25 − 3 = 7.25 in → 1 strip ripped to 7 1/4 in; riser 7.25 in → 1 strip. 27 strips, one per plank → 27 planks; plus 10% → 30 → 4 boxes (32 planks).
  • Adhesive: ⌈13 ÷ 2⌉ = 7 tubes. Stair area: 33.3 sq ft of treads + 25.4 sq ft of risers = 58.7 sq ft.

Stair nosings: how many and what length

Every nosed edge needs a nosing: one per tread, plus one on the top floor edge if the floor up there gets the same finish. Nosings come in lengths such as 78 in and 94 in; one 94 in piece covers two 36 in steps, so 14 edges take 7 nosings. If the stairs are wider than a nosing, each one needs a joint, and the calculator says so.

Treads and risers from planks

Behind the nosing, the tread field is the tread depth minus what the nosing covers, 3 in by default. It is filled with rows of planks like a small floor, ripped to width; a riser takes one or two strips. A strip uses a whole plank when the stairs are wider than half a plank, and two strips come from one plank on narrower stairs. Construction adhesive is counted at one tube per two steps.

Tiling stairs

For tile, the treads, risers and any landing are counted by area with 20% waste for the many small cuts, with thinset and grout as in the tile calculator. A stair edge trim goes on every nosed edge, cut from 8 ft lengths.

Frequently asked questions

How many stair nosings do I need?

One per tread, plus one for the top floor edge if it gets the same flooring. A long nosing can cover two narrow steps: 94 in nosings on 36 in stairs halve the count.

How many boxes of vinyl plank for 13 stairs?

For 36 in wide stairs with 47 1/4 × 7 1/2 in planks, about 30 planks with 10% extra — 4 boxes of 8 — plus 7 nosings of 94 in.

How many square feet is a staircase?

Treads × width × depth plus risers × width × height. Thirteen 36 × 10 1/4 in treads and fourteen 7 1/4 in risers come to 58.7 sq ft — but you buy by the piece, not by that area.

Do I count the top step?

Count every tread you cover. The top floor edge is not a tread, but it usually gets a nosing; that is the “nosing on the top floor edge too” option.

Can I use the same planks as the floor?

Yes, and with a matching nosing the stairs and the floor share boxes: add the stairs next to your rooms and the project list rounds the planks together.

What about winder steps?

Winders and open sides with return nosings are not counted yet. Enter winders as straight steps at their widest depth and add a little extra.
